iPad Mail and why it always makes me scroll up to see newest emails

The only thing that worked for me since I had thousands of e mails was to work my way up from the e mail thread that was opening up when I opened the mail app on my iPad and select one from a few weeks more recently... quit the mail program... re open it to make sure it was starting with that more recent e mail.... scroll up a few hundred more e mails and select another one... quit mail... reopen to make sure... and I worked my way up to the top and now it is opening with that selected e mail... let’s see how it goes as time goes on...
This worked:
1. Open the recent email to which you want iPad to return instead of the ancient one.
2. Manipulate it somehow (I clicked “reply”) but then escape so Mail doesn’t complete the action (I pressed ESC and didn’t reply).
3. Close iPad by swiping it up.
4. Open iPad
For me at least, it opened at the new email. Still annoying because you’d prefer it would open at the top of the inbox folder and not inside any particular email. But better because at least you’re inside a fairly recent email.
I totally agree this needs to be addressed by Apple. It doesn’t do this on the iPhone and if it did everyone would want it addressed. Not sure why they won’t address it for the iPad. Hopefully someone at Apple reads through these questions. Just to repeat the concern. When I open the mail app and it opens any of my accounts e-mail it show the mail in the middle or so of the list of e-mails. I have to either scroll to the top of the list or touch above to have it jump to the top of the list. This is not a solution, it’s a bank-aid. This should be addressed so it works correctly. Can someone from Apple please reply? Thanks!
Maybe I’m not doing it right but this technique isn’t working for me. Is there a way to completely close Mail for iPad? I just kick the icon off the screen but I think it’s still running in background...
Absolutely! Hey Apple? Hello? Anybody assigned to support your existing products or is everyone out trying to sell iPhones?
The search box is at the top of the screen too. Still have to scroll to top.
I'm seeing the same behavior. Hey Apple, perhaps a setting? No clear way around this is annoying at best.
I have multiple exchange accounts and if I switch between the "All In Boxes" view and one of the accounts, the behavior changes to what most on this thread would consider optimal. That is, to the top of the list, but this 'forgets' the last opened email, or rather the email that was opened when the app was closed and/or shutdown.
I enjoy that it remembers the last selected/open email, very convenient, but it would be most convenient to be able to clearly deselect an email, close/shutdown the app, then upon reopening the app the view defaults to the top of the list, shared view or otherwise...my 2c.
I have noticed a similar behaviour but not with all my email accounts. The only one that shows this problem is a gmail account. hotmail and btmail always highlight the last message read. If I log into the gmail mobile site in Safari and hightlight the latest message, then go back to ipad mail then the latest mesage is highlighted. It seems to be that gmail is telling ipad mail which message you last looked at in the site.
Try this, it just worked for me. There is a mail setting to Organize email by thread. Turn it off, close your email app, then reopen it. The problem goes off. I also tried after that turninig it on as i like thread organization and the problem still gone away.
If tapping the AT&T or iPad text instead sends you back up a level to the mailboxes, first tap in the Search box, and then on the AT&T / iPad text.
I can't believe it's taken me, and so many others it seems from the forum posts, so long to find this shortcut. Clearly not the most intuitive!
Yes mail seems to remember where you were when you last opened it on my iPad. And yes if you tap in the open area just above where it says inbox it will scroll to the newest email in your inbox. Thanks for posting!
That's just a short cut to the top - it doesn't resolve the strange way iPad mail opens up, usuallly on a very old msg. Still happening on IOS 10. About time Apple fixed it!
It's been happening a long time over several iOS's for me too. 😐
IIt's not remembering the place I left off I literally can scroll to the to close the app and it will immediately open back to an old messag and I need to scroll to the top again. I've stopped using the email app on my iPad mostly
